Amazing Summer Movies for Families to Enjoy

“What’s your family’s favorite movie?” my friend Melanie asked me.

She was working on a post about great family-friendly movies to watch over the summer.  Would I choose a movie and write a review for her to share with her readers?”

Of course, I would!

Cue the popcorn-scented memories of boys in pajamas, four abreast on the beat-up family room couch!  So many musicals, corny Disney humor, gun fights, car chases, and light saber duels to chose from.

I finally had to poll the boys, “Hey, what’s our favorite movie of all time?”

They chose the zany and heartwarming Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, a 1968 musical adventure starring Dick van Dyke and featuring the writing talents of Ian Fleming (the book) and Roald Dahl (the screen play).Chitty

This is Week 2 of the series.  Head on over to Melanie Redd’s place to see what we like about the movie we chose and why it was our favorite.

Each Wednesday morning this summer, Melanie will add a new review for you to enjoy.  You and your family can gain a whole slew of great movie suggestions from reading these weekly reviews. We hope these articles will lead to a fun summer of movie watching for you and your crew.

My friend, Dawn Klinge, reviewed Pete’s Dragon last week, and there are more movie reviews on the way.

  1. Michele,
Just seeing the picture for your post gave me such a smile. I immediately began singing the Chitty, Chitty Bang, Bang theme song. Such good childhood memories of watching this movie!! I will head on over to Melanie’s place to read further, but just wanted to say you had me at first glance 🙂

    1. Hi, Janis! I’ve been quiet this spring and summer, but I’m still here. Melanie’s series looks like it’s going to be really helpful. I’m looking forward to reading reviews from the other contributors.

  2. Toy Story, 1,2,3 hands down for our girls. One summer the three girls watched all the Pixar movies in a row and managed a spreadsheet evaluating: romance, action, conflict, plot, humor, sidekicks and then 1-10 rating system. Lots of blankets and pillows and popcorn. Great memories! Our church does a sermon series on current movies as an outreach every summer. this summer’s pics are Hidden figures, Finding Dory and LaLaLand – finding gospel shadows in modern culture. It’s called: Reel Grace – so fun!

I’ve not seen this movie in a long time, but I’d love to go back and watch it again after reading your summary.
Hope you and your family are having a wonderful summer~

  5. What a fun idea for a Summer series. I’d forgotten all about the movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang! There are so many good older movies to watch with children and grandchildren. For that matter, I like to watch them myself. Looking forward to more reviews!

  8. Interesting choice! I honestly can’t remember if I’ve ever seen that. I usually watch the Anne of Green Gables movies every summer. And Lord of the Rings – I love that series, too.

    1. LOVE Anne of Green Gables. And Lord of the Rings was the movie choice for years and years whenever my youngest was sick. He’d watch his way through the whole series on the couch. 🙂

  9. Oh my, what memories! My husband always reminds me that Ian Fleming wrote James Bond novels too when we talk of this movie. I see his style and similarity especially in the character names in Chitty, Chitty Bang Bang!
