Bring the Kids You Love Heart to Heart with the Bible

Bring the Kids You Love Heart to Heart with the Bible

We propped the lopsided flannel board against the back of the couch, and my grandkids organized the slightly dogeared images, arguing for a minute about who would get to “do the snake.” Apparently, Moses wore a bright pink striped robe in his encounter with the burning bush and didn’t have time to change before his appointment with Pharoah, but that detail was lost in the shuffle as one by one, the kids lined small pictures of the ten plagues along the bottom of the board.

Sharing Bible time with my grandkids has become a priority for this grandmother, and it’s surprising how hard it is to make it happen. Fortunately, as a dinosaur from an era before the earth’s crust cooled, I have accumulated a file drawer full of flannelgraph Bible stories, a technology which is just archaic enough to be really intriguing for little people. I read the story from the Bible (with my own dramatic insertions, of course!), and they assemble the visuals.

There is no shortage of resources available for parents and grandparents—and for friends, neighbors, and Sunday school teachers—to use in bringing the kids we love heart to heart with the Bible. What does seem to be in short supply is time. However, if we want our kids to become lovers of God and followers of his Word, we must prioritize heart-to-heart spiritual conversations in our homes, in our mini-vans, and when we’re “walking by the way.”

Heart to Heart

My oldest granddaughter just turned seven, so I’m storing up lessons ahead of time for my days of grandmothering a teen girl. Stacey Pardoe is a well-loved writing friend who is mentoring her own daughter Bekah in the writing life as well as in the faith. Their latest collaboration is a collection of fifty devotionals aimed specifically to reach the hearts of teen girls and their mothers.

There’s no question that kids are faced with different challenges than their moms faced at the same age. The water they’re swimming in portrays doubt as a virtue, identity as fluid, and morality as a quaint convention. Media and entertainment choices seem determined to undermine godly values, and busy schedules make it challenging to carve out time for meaningful mother/daughter check-ins. Heart to Heart is designed with all this in mind.

With lined spaces for both Mom and Daughter to journal and insightful questions to prime the pump, each devotional initiates a different conversation with topics ranging from fear of failure and stress to calling and comparison. Women of all ages need reassurance of God’s approval and his good intentions. The message that thrums throughout the book is clear: Jesus is relentlessly loving—and he is pursuing you.

What Other Reviewers Are Saying

Heart to Heart is an interactive and heartwarming book to help mothers and daughters navigate the tender high school years together. Stacey’s heart and vision is to help mothers and daughters deeply connect as they read and reflect on the challenges most teens face in a gentle, encouraging way. ~Donna Miller, writer at freshgracefortoday.co

  1. What a stellar idea, an interactive journal!! My middle granddaughter is eleven and already experimenting with various types of journaling. This might make a great birthday present when she turns twelve!
