Are You Showing the Symptoms of Gratitude Derailed? Sunday Scripture

We’re four days away from Thanksgiving here in the United States, and since the fourth Thursday in November is late in the month this year, we’ve had lots of time to prepare ourselves for a celebration of gratitude.

How are you doing?

I will confess to a certain grumpiness over the collision of holidays ahead with Thanksgiving weekend bumping into the first Sunday of Advent, leaving us searching for a Christmas tree with turkey leftovers languishing in the fridge. It doesn’t take much to derail gratitude, and Paul lamented its lack and then described the symptoms in his letter to Rome:

…although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened.”
(Romans 1:21)

Futile, foolish, and dark.

If you sense any of this in your own attitude, give thanks instead. Honor God by acknowledging his attributes. Recognize his glory. He is the originator of every good thing. If we miss this, we miss our purpose on this planet.

  1. Michele, just last night my husband and I were talking about this. It’s amazing to think how quickly Christmas will be upon us. “Lord, I thank you for your grace and mercy and goodness in keeping our family this past year.”

  5. Lord, we thank you for Godly men. I did not want two funerals this week. The empty chair at Thanksgiving is a reality in 2019. Thank you for everything we learned about life and faith from these men. Remind us to hug the widows at our table every year. Amen.

  6. I confess that I am guilty. Every year with work, meal preparations for all the family since I was in my late twenties, kids excited for the Christmas season, I totally agree that over the years there were for me many thankless holidays in my attitude. I also confess there is a hangover effect for me and I am praying for peace at this time of year, and to welcome the intrusion on my otherwise very quiet lifestyle now in my 70’s. However, I am Thankful for his Peace that he gives as the kids and grbabes arrive, and Thankful that kids still want to bless my home with their presence, and Thankful for a daughter who is welcoming the hubbub into her home this year so no all day cooking for any of us as we share dishes to make and take. Also, doing my first ever 5k walk Thanksgiving morning, but we’ll see how far this old body will go although I do walk, but of late have been amiss at doing that. So that is my list and much more. haha

    2. four wonderful children, all serving the Lord

    4. a car than keeps running
    5. great parents, still living
    6. a good Christian Heritage
    7. enough money to live on

    11. That God should love a sinner such as I
