Here in rural Maine on an average Saturday, I might pull some weeds while I’m snipping crisp, early-morning lettuce leaves. There might be a carrot cake in the oven, a salad under construction on the counter, and a podcast playing in the background.
Meanwhile, in Afghanistan, on that very same Saturday, a woman my age with an empty nest and a full heart might be wondering how her granddaughter will get an education or if one of her sons will pay with his life for his identity as a Christ-follower. In Haiti, a middle-aged woman like me might be missing her garden where it lies under a pile of rubble or strategizing for her family’s next supply of clean drinking water.
No matter where you fall on the political spectrum, no matter where you think the blame falls for these sad and unsettling days, the falling hammer of oppression in Afghanistan, the falling buildings and hillsides in Haiti should land on every believer’s heart as a call to prayer.
Will you join me in prayer today?
A Prayer for Hope for Our Hurting World
Together, Lord, we lift before you the needs of our hurting world, knowing full well that your heart is already grieving for all the loss, the destruction and death in Haiti,
for all the chaos and fear that rules the day in Afghanistan.
We pray for those who are hungry with no hope of being filled,
for those who are sick with no hope of medical attention,
for those who are fearful with no hope of rescue.
We come to you on their behalf asking for provision, for you are the Hope that does not disappoint.
God, raise up leaders in our world who are courageous to stand against corruption.
We wonder, Lord, sitting in our privilege and comfort, arguing about vaccines and masks, if it’s even possible to serve you faithfully without running water or basic freedoms, so we pray that you would protect our brothers and sisters in Christ whose lives may be threatened because they have chosen to set their hope in your unseen Kingdom.
Enlarge our compassion, Lord, for we are a distracted people who scroll past misery and then complain about our slow internet speed. Thank you that you are a God who can hold and respond to the pain of every nation, every man, woman, and child as if they were the only voice in your ear. Hold us in faithful prayer for our hurting world, for we dare not look away from the suffering of others lest we become callous, deaf and blind to your calling upon our lives.
In Jesus’s precious name,
Enlarge our compassion, Lord. We are a distracted people who scroll past misery then complain about our slow internet speed. Thank you that you hold the pain of every man, woman, and child as if they were the only voice in your ear.Tweet
The new issue of Joyful Life Magazine can now be pre-ordered, and it includes an article from me! Look for “If I’m Already Forgiven, Why Do I Need to Confess My Sins?” Too, my friend Sue Moore Donaldson is sharing her thoughts on spiritual growth. The fall print publication will orient our gaze toward the beautiful growth and change that the Lord is working in our hearts and our homes.
Best of all, the first 100 to pre-order will receive some special bonus gifts.
