Prayer for a New Year

It’s tempting, LORD, to put my faith
in your gifts
Rather than in you alone.

Good health enables early rising, satisfying productivity;
Strong legs:  a swift gait;
Clarity of thought:  a coherent paragraph;
An understanding friend:  the comfort of being known.

I wonder though,
Could I share the Story?
Advance the Kingdom?
Or even get out of bed tomorrow,
if all your gifts were swept away?
Everything but you?

Father of Lights who shines the way to Truth,
forgive my prone-to-wander heart
and reset its wavering compass
to True North.

Amen

Blessings to you in this fresh, new year,

  1. Thanks for this wonderful poem/prayer. I like what you said at the end: “Father of Lights who shines the way to Truth, forgive my prone-to-wander heart and reset its wavering compass to True North.” It’s easy for us to get distracted and lost, but God is our ultimate Navigator. Great metaphor you chose. Blessings!

  2. mmm … yes, when our health goes south, when our friends leave for heavenly pastures, when all around our souls gives way … that’s when we find who we’re REALLY trusting in.

    Looking forward to doing 2020 alongside you, friend. Thank you for all the depths of wisdom you pour into my life. Bless you …
